Being a massage therapist, I see and feel a lot of skin.
The different shades, textures, and sensitivity always leaves me in amazement. The largest organ of the human body. That’s right! an organ. Like a second liver, it helps filter the crap we put into and onto our bodies. Be kind!
As an artist, I delight in the many variations of color and tones. From peachy ivory to a dark, warm coffee color and everything in between. The human rainbow is lovely.
Texture is another, interesting thing. I have young and old bodies cross my table. As an amateur, anthropologist. I automatically take note of the genetics of clients. People of Native American and Asian decent have a beautiful, smooth texture. A client in his 60’s has firm, supple skin of someone half his age.
Ticklish, hairy, dry, oily, bumpy, scarred, tattooed, psoriasis patches, or whatever might be expressing itself on your skin, unless contagious. I’ll work with or around the issue.
I have highly sensitive skin myself. My body is good at letting me know when something is amiss. It always shows up on my skin. Like a billboard, it lets me know when I’m suffering from stress or dehydration. I look forward to the day I can stop battling pimples, dry patches and the random rash that makes me retrace my week to wonder what it’s from. Stress is horrible to my skin. I battled cystic acne for many, stress filled years. I cut out the stress and the problem went away.
As we all know. I love tattoos. I love to ask about the stories behind the ink. Some times it’s a good one. Sometimes.. not so much. Tattoos are a serious commitment. A drunken dare is NOT a good reason for the tattoo of a unicorn humping a Smurf. Good luck explaining that to your grandchildren.
Now, if I see something that seems unusual. I’ll give you a heads up. That’s part of my job. I have your back in more ways that one. Feeling a bit dry? I’ll use extra lotion or oil. Have an itchy spot? I have a salve I can put on it.
Skin, we all have it. It’s as unique as the people sporting it. It is our first defense against the world we live in. Sensitive as a baby or tough as a rhino. Take good care of your hide!
