I’m poor. I’ve always lived at the poverty line and it does feel like this society penalizes you for it. You don’t have the luxury of buying in bulk and saving money in the long run. You can’t afford to buy quality products that last and are stuck in a cycle of buying cheap crap that needs to be replaced often. Used cars are a fucking money pit. Lets not forget the hilarity of insufficient funds fees. All it takes is one, small disaster and suddenly you’re in a downward spiral. Welcome to debt slavery.
I love the idea of Basic Income. My son and I disagree. He’s of the mindset that, if you don’t work. You don’t eat. Well, most people want to do something meaningful and creative. This way, no one has to work a job they hate. Let automation take care of the mind numbing, dull work that is little more than a means of keeping the monkeys busy and distracted from their soul’s true purpose. It’s a fucking trap!
The poor are routinely squeezed for money. Modern day debtors’ prison exists. The poor are vilified as being lazy and stupid. I’m neither. What I lack is opportunity in a society that applauds anyone with money. No matter how vile a human being they are. I hear people talk about getting their 15 minutes of fame and being set for life. Make a sex tape and be a useless, famous whore. No one has any shame when it comes to money.
When things get tight I have to get creative. Cheap, starchy foods to fill out the smaller portions of “good” food. Cherry pick the laundry and only wash what is absolutely needed. Go without for as long as you can and hope to have enough money to buy what you need when it finally wears out. Being poor is a constant anxiety attack. You live so close to the edge. One, little disaster and you’re living in your car. It’s scary here.
